The International Museum of Muslim Cultures

Museum Information

Museum Mission

astrolabe

This reproduction of an antique astrolabe may be seen in the Museum’s Islamic Moorish Spain exhibit. The astrolabe originated in Greece and was introduced to the Islamic world during the eighth century. Astronomers and mapmakers used it to determine time of day or night and the location of celestial bodies.

The International Museum of Muslim Cultures is dedicated to educating the public about Islamic History and Culture.

The Museum also celebrates the contributions Muslims have made to the city of Jackson, the state of Mississippi, the region, the nation, and the world. In educating the public about the diversity of the area's cultural and religious heritage, the Museum describes the Muslim experience and places it in context with other cultural and religious groups.

Through research and the collection, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of objects that promote the understanding of Muslim culture, the Museum strives to facilitate multicultural and interfaith tolerance, reducing religious and racial bigotry and advancing religious and civic dialogue.

Museum History

In December 2000 a group of Jackson, Mississippi, area Muslims identified the need for the development of a national museum to educate the public about Islamic history and culture and the contributions of Muslims to world civilization. The founders also sought to increase citizens’ understanding and appreciation of the richness of Mississippi’s diverse cultural and religious heritage and the role that Muslims have played in the state’s history and development.

Located in downtown Jackson's Arts District, the International Museum of Muslim Cultures (IMMC) is the first and only Islamic history museum in the country. The Museum opened in April 2001 with a major exhibition, Islamic Moorish Spain: Its Legacy to Europe and the West, that was featured concurrently with The Majesty of Spain, an international exhibition that ran for six months in Jackson at the Mississippi Arts Pavilion, less than a block away. The proximity and complementary theme helped contribute to the Museum’s attracting 2,000 visitors in its first month of operation.

IMMC, in its new location at the Mississippi Arts Center, is next door to the Russell C. Davis Planetarium, the Mississippi Museum of Art, Thalia Mara Hall (City Auditorium), the new telecommunications center, and within walking distance of the Old Capitol Museum, the War Memorial Building, and the Farish Street Historic District—all significant educational and cultural attractions in the heart of the capital city. This synergy has stimulated visits by tourists as well as school groups to the Museum and bodes well for the future. Since opening, the Museum has received some 27,000 local, national, and international visitors representing more than 40 states and 45 countries. The tragedy of September 11, 2001, coming only six months after the Museum’s opening, has had the dichotomous effect of increasing interest in educational programs about Islam while deterring some visitation.

The goals of the Museum are to educate the public about Islamic history and civilization and to help provide educational tools for teaching global consciousness, historical literacy, and multicultural appreciation. IMMC seeks to continue to grow as a cultural tourism destination and serve the community as an educational and research center as well as a repository for Islamic objects having cultural, artistic, aesthetic, and historical significance. Additionally, IMMC seeks to facilitate multicultural and interfaith understanding; reduce cultural, religious, and racial bigotry; and advance Mississippi and America's cultural, religious, and civic discussions to provide a better atmosphere for working together for the common good.

In the last five years IMMC has reached an important milestone. Under the leadership of a full-time executive director and board of directors chairman—two of the institution’s founders—and its board of directors, the Museum successfully transitioned from being a religious satellite institution to a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) independent museum with national impact.

The board of directors governs IMMC, with oversight and management responsibilities vested in the two founders, Emad Al-Turk and Okolo Rashid, who serve as board chairman and executive director/board secretary, respectively. Ms. Rashid manages the day-to-day operation of the Museum and will serve as the project director for The Legacy of Timbuktu.

Ms. Rashid holds a B.A. in economics from Tougaloo College and a Master’s in public policy/administration with specialty in community and economic development from Jackson State University. Before the Museum was founded, she owned her own firm, specializing in consulting and project administration with a focus on community development projects, including historic preservation, working primarily with inner city community and grassroots organizations. She has more than 20 years’ experience in community and organizational development.

Mr. Al-Turk holds a B.S. and M.S. in civil engineering from the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University, respectively, and an M.B.A. from Millsaps College. Mr. Al-Turk was chief operating officer of Waggoner Engineering, Inc., a leading engineering firm in the southern region of the United States, for almost 15 years, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the firm. He was also involved in planning, design, construction, administration, and overall project management and funding for well over $100 million in construction projects. He is an independent businessman in the Jackson, Mississippi area.

Building on the successes of five years of operation, the mounting of a one-half million dollar long-term exhibit in six months’ time, and the development of strong links to the academic community, business and community at-large, the Museum is preparing for an expansion. With its new move to the state of the arts Mississippi Arts Center, the Museum will offer a venue of considerable interest to Mississippi and the nation with the mounting of a newest exhibition, The Legacy of Timbuktu: Wonders of the Written Word.

Emergence of Islam in the African-American Community

By Adam Edgerly and This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Muslims make up about 6% of the population in the United States. The majority of conversions to this growing religion is occurring within the African-American community (a little over 11% of America's population).

Many African-Americans view Christianity as the White man's religion and associate conversion to Islam with recovering their ethnic heritage. Thus, to effectively evangelize African-American Muslims, it is crucial to understand the development of the American Muslim movement. The following study examines the rise of the movement and traces its history and theological development.

Theological Vacuum

Like the struggle for freedom and dignity, historic African-American theology developed along two streams, northern and southern. In both cases an over-arching Biblical pattern and theme (paradigm) developed for doing ministry.

Of course, like all other Bible-believing communities, the historic African-American church preached Christ crucified and risen, as well as the doctrine of salvation by grace through faith. The ministry paradigm came in the way the church worked out and applied its faith to the surrounding community.

In the ante-bellum South where slavery was king, the theological paradigm was 'Exodus'. The slaves identified with the children of Israel in Egyptian bondage and saw the hand of God at work in terms of their hope in deliverance from slavery. This theology addressed the issues of survival, refuge and resistance to oppression.

In the ante-bellum North where slavery died out, the theological paradigm was the 'Exile'. The freedmen saw the hand of God at work in terms of a special calling they sensed to bring the gospel of Christ to the rest of the 'African Diaspora', people of African descent living in the South, Canada, the Caribbean, and Africa. Had it fully developed, this would have been a theology addressing the issues of dignity, African identity, and global significance.

With the official end of slavery in 1865, the former slaves were devastated and confused about their identity in the economy of God. Yet the indigenous African-American church experienced explosive growth. A major contributing factor was the fact that the church in the North and the South adequately addressed the need for a true identity. This was achieved when the church adopted the Northern 'exilic' theological paradigm. They called it 'Pan-Africanism'. Under this banner the African-American church became actively involved in cultural and economic development in the United States and in missions, especially in Africa.

However, three events radically altered the theological direction of the African-American church. They were 1) the end of the post-Civil War Reconstruction in the South in 1877, 2) the Industrial Revolution in the North, and 3) the consolidation of European colonialism in Africa as the result of the Congress of Berlin (1878) and the Conference of Berlin (1884-85).

With the end of Reconstruction in the South, the former slaves were subject to racist terrorism and intimidation as White supremacy was re-established. Concurrent with the industrial revolution in the North was a massive wave of European immigration. This led to the rise of the White-only trade unions. The result was the elimination of African-Americans from the skilled labor force.

The consolidation of colonialism in Africa decimated the missions movement of the African-American church.

These traumas forced the church to abandon the Pan-African approach to ministry and revert to the old survival approach which had emerged in the context of slavery. This created a theological vacuum in the areas of dignity, African identity, and global significance.

Several non-Christian attempts were made to fill this vacuum. Among them were 1) W. E. B. Dubois and his advocacy of solidarity through education, 2) a few Black Jewish sects, 3) Marcus Garvey and the United Negro Improvement Association (U.N.I.A.), and 4) several Black nationalist oriented Islamic sects. Islam's attempt to fill the vacuum is discussed in the following pages.

A Religion of Separatism

The first actual African-American Muslim sect was the Moorish Science Temple Divine and National Movement of North America, founded in Newark, New Jersey by Timothy Drew (Noble Drew Ali) in 1913. In 1925, the name of the sect was changed to the Moorish Temple of Science. Drew Ali developed the 'Koran of the Moorish Holy Temple of Science' and taught that Allah had ordained him as his prophet to the dark people of America. Ali stated that Negro and Black signified death and Colored signified something painted. Therefore, the terms Asiatic, Moor or Moorish-American must be used. Ali taught that salvation was found by discovering national origin and refusing to be called Negro, Black, Colored, Ethiopian, etc.

Noble Drew Ali died in 1929, and two of his disciples claimed to be his reincarnation and heir to the leadership of the sect. The first of these disciples was Sheik Timothy Givins El who established a faction called Moorish Temple of Science headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. In 1975, Grand Sheik Richardson Dingle-El founded a splinter group and reverted to the original name.

The second of these disciples was Wali D. Fard, a mysterious White man of Turkish origins, also known as Aka Wali Fard Muhammad. Fard established the Temple of Islam headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. He appeared in the Paradise Valley of Detroit, declaring himself to be the leader of the Nation of Islam. He claimed to have remedies for the social and economic problems facing Americans of African descent. He asserted that he had come to gain freedom, justice, and equality for them.

Fard made his living peddling silks and other artifacts door to door, presenting them as African. In this way, Fard gained access to African-American homes and began propagating his doctrine. Since his audience was familiar with the Bible, he used it as a springboard for his teachings. He then slowly introduced them to the text of the Quran. Fard's message was this

  • Christianity is a tool in the hands of the White slave masters to control the minds of Black people.
  • White people are devils, the embodiment of evil.
  • The only hope for Black people in America is total separation and self-reliance.
  • Between 1930 and 1933, Fard recruited 8,000 followers among Detroit Blacks.(1) As a result of the organization's rapid growth, Fard found it necessary to train several ministers to help him. Among these was an unemployed auto worker named Robert Poole.

As the son of a Baptist minister, Poole knew the Bible quite well. Poole, later known as Elijah Muhammad, became the chief minister of the Temple of Islam and Fard's eventual successor. In 1932 , Elijah Muhammad moved to Chicago and founded Temple #2. However, he returned to Detroit to aid Fard, who had been imprisoned. Later, Fard joined Elijah Muhammad at Temple #2 in Chicago, but he was soon arrested there as well. Under the pressure of continued conflict with police, Fard eventually mysteriously disappeared.

Later, the Temple of Islam divided into two factions. One faction, led by Abdul Muhammad, believed that Fard was a prophet of Allah and kept the name Temple of Islam. The most prominent faction was the Chicago-based Nation of Islam led by Elijah Muhammad. He believed that Fard was Allah in person. Eventually, Abdul Muhammad's faction was reabsorbed into the Nation of Islam.

Elijah Muhammad expounded his doctrine in the book Message to the Black Man in America. Fard's disappearance made his image as a Christ-figure more marketable. Also, Muhammad used his familiarity with the Scriptures to present Fard as the fulfillment of prophecy. 'You must forget about ever seeing the return of Jesus who was here 2000 years ago. Set your heart on seeing the one that he said would come at the end of the present world's time (the White race's time). He is called the 'Son of Man', the 'Christ', the 'Comforter.''(2) Muhammad argued that Jesus did not know the day or the hour of the coming of the Son of Man (Matthew 2436), thus he could not have been predicting his own return. Muhammad asserted that Fard was the Mahdi spoken of in the Quran.

Elijah Muhammad taught that the ultimate solution to the problem facing the African-American community was total separation from White society and the establishment of a Black Muslim state somewhere in North America or elsewhere. Furthermore, Muhammad taught that integration was a hypocritical and deceptive offer. Its intention was to deceive Black people into believing the opponents of freedom, justice, and equality were now their friends. Elijah Muhammad despised the Christian doctrine of loving one's enemy. In fact, his thinking concurred with W. D. Fard's hostile view of Christianity. Moreover, he saw the Black preacher as the greatest impediment to the progress of the Black race.

The allegation that 'Christianity' had been used to subjugate Black people is undeniable. Although the Quakers opposed slavery early on, staging the first anti-slavery demonstration in 1688, most churches either defended slavery, ignored it, or were divided over the issue.(3) In light of this fact, the teachings of Elijah Muhammad fell upon eager ears. He was preaching to people who were waiting for a claim to dignity and self-sufficiency, as well as for spiritual fulfillment. He convinced them that the answers to their problems were found only in Islam.

    A New Theology

Elijah Muhammad's teachings were by no means orthodox Islam. He taught that Allah was a man, W. D. Fard, whom he knew personally. He taught that Black people created and owned the universe and founded the city of Mecca. He also taught that a mad scientist named Yacub created the White race 6000 years ago.

According to Muhammad, Yacub was an exile from Mecca. He determined to take revenge on Allah and on those who exiled him and his 59,999 followers to the island of Patmos. Hence, through crude genetic engineering, he created a race of white devils. After Yacub's death, this devil race returned to Arabia. They began to turn the peaceful society into a hell torn by quarreling and fighting. They were eventually exiled to Europe and penned in to keep them from spreading.

Muhammad also asserted that there are 24 scientists who rule the universe and write a prophetic book of history prior to each 25,000 years. They predicted Yacub would create this race of devils, who would rule the earth for 6000 years. According to Elijah Muhammad, those 6000 years are over. The battle of Armageddon between Blacks and Whites, Muslims and Christians is about to occur.(4)

For the most part, Elijah Muhammad was preaching to uneducated people, unfamiliar with Islam. Just as he twisted passages of the Bible to suit his purpose, he concocted a version of Islam to address what he saw were the needs of Black Americans. The appeal of his new religion was its emphasis on Black self-awareness, self-sufficiency, and the promise that God was on the side of African-Americans in their struggle against racial oppression in America.

    The Appeal of the Movement

A demographic study of Black Muslims by C. Eric Lincoln (5) revealed some startling insights into who responded to Elijah Muhammad's message. The majority of those who joined the Nation of Islam were young, economically disadvantaged, African-American males from Christian backgrounds. Up to 80% of a typical congregation were between the ages of 17 and 35. Traditionally, the church in the Black community has had difficulty attracting young males. In an article entitled, 'Why Most Black Men Won't Go to Church,' Reverend William Harris attributes the primary reason to economics

'Many Black males won't go to church because today's church does not address their needs. The Black male needs money, job opportunities, business resources, and relevant skills training. The church collects money, but does little to create opportunities through which he can make more money. Jesus understood the need to feed people before preaching to them. Today's church must likewise set the table for the Black man before asking him to pay to have the dishes done.(6)

Elijah Muhammad's program for economic development played a crucial role in the rapid growth of the Nation of Islam. With the money donated by members, Muhammad purchased land for farms, store fronts, bakeries, apartment buildings and schools. The economic base of the organization grew in proportion to numerical growth. By owning businesses and land, Elijah Muhammad was able to provide both housing and employment for needy followers. Furthermore, the members had the added pride of sharing in the ownership of these various enterprises and being, to a great extent, independent of the broader society. Scarcity of employment for young Black males offers one explanation of why they were drawn to the Nation of Islam in such large numbers.

Men were also drawn to the Nation of Islam because of the emphasis placed on male leadership. African-American churches tend to be dominated by women, with one central male figure, the pastor in the pulpit. As a result, many men do not feel affirmed in the church environment. They see the pastor as a threat and even a rival. Elijah Muhammad was able to criticize the Black male while affirming his role. Thus he challenged men to take the lead, and they responded. 'Unlike the typical Christian church, the Muslim temples attract many more men than women, and men assume the full management of temple affairs. Women are honored and they perform important functions within a defined role.'(7)

The role of women consists of teaching other women and managing the affairs of the home. Ironically, women were also attracted to the Nation of Islam because they appreciated the strength of the men and the protective posture they took towards Black women. As C. Eric Lincoln noted in his research, the Nation of Islam appeals to the young regardless of gender.

'A surprising number of young people are attracted by the Muslims' redefinition of the roles men and women should play in the home and in the religious life of the sect. There is a strong emphasis on the equality of individuals irrespective of sex, but each sex is assigned a role considered proper for itself. The trend in our larger society seems to be towards blurring the distinct line between the traditional social roles of men and women. The Muslims, on the other hand, claim to have restored the women to a place of dignity and respect...Muslim women seem to welcome the security and protection implicit in this arrangement....Children seem to profit most, for among Muslim children, delinquency is unheard of.' (8)

Among people who were not accustomed to the security of a strong nuclear family with well-defined roles, the Nation of Islam provided welcomed structure. The underlying message of the Nation was that the disorder they had experienced up until then had been caused by outside forces beyond their control, evil influences they were now to avoid at all cost.

'Muslim women particularly are forbidden contact with either sex of the White race, on the theory that, 1) 'no White man has honorable intentions toward any Black women', and 2) White women are immoral by nature. White women are said to corrupt the minds of Black women, who then try to imitate them by 'displaying their bodies, neglecting their children and abandoning their men'.(9) Just as Adolf Hitler salved the consciences of the Germans by blaming the Jews for all their economic and political woes, Elijah Muhammad found in the White race the source of every ill within the Black community, especially with regard to the family. Thus the causes for the growth of the movement were both economic and psychological.

    A Dynamic Young Spokesman

The greatest period of growth in the Nation of Islam cannot be directly attributed to Elijah Muhammad. In 1948, while serving a prison sentence in Massachusetts, a young man by the name of Malcolm Little became acquainted with the teachings of Elijah Muhammad and was converted. Upon release from prison, Malcolm Little, a former pimp, drug pusher, armed robber, and numbers man, returned to Detroit and began aggressively recruiting for Detroit Temple #1. He received recognition for his efforts from Elijah Muhammad, who changed his name to Malcolm X. 'X' symbolized his original African name, which he never knew, and replaced the slave master's name, Little.(10) This individual bearing the name 'X' would soon make both the name and organization it represented a symbol of freedom for some and fear for others.

Malcolm X frequently visited Elijah Muhammad in his home in Chicago to talk for hours. Because of his aggressive recruiting, new ideas and unyielding devotion to Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm was appointed as national spokesman. 'He was...crisscrossing North America, sometimes as often as four times a week. From Detroit, Malcolm was sent to organize Temple #11. In March 1954, Malcolm moved from Boston to Philadelphia, and in three months Temple #12 was opened....From Philadelphia, Malcolm moved to New York City and became minister of Temple #7.(11) In fact, Malcolm X was instrumental in the establishment of most of the temples in North America, and he took credit for the increase in membership from 400 to 40,000 that occurred within a few years after he joined the Nation of Islam.

Even today, Malcolm X looms larger than life in the African-American quest for the elusive prize of freedom and dignity. He attracted tens of thousands with his emphasis on cultural concerns, discipline, solidarity of the brotherhood, and African identity.

It seems these factors will continue to be a strong draw for young African-American males in the foreseeable future. It is also unlikely that the church will make any significant headway among these young men until it addresses these concerns. The Bible more than adequately addresses these issues, and it is time for Christians to apply God's word.

    The Hanafis

In 1950, Khalifa Hamaas Abdul Khaalis (Ernest T. McGee) joined the Nation of Islam in an attempt to bring the sect into line with orthodox Sunni Islam. By 1956, he had become national secretary. His efforts proved unsuccessful, so in 1958, he broke with Elijah Muhammad and founded the Al-Hanif, Hanafi, Madh-Hob Center, Islam Faith, United States of America, American Mussulmans. Based in Washington DC, the Hanafis still adhere to the basic tenets of Sunni Islam.

The Hanafi Muslims gained notoriety in 1973 when five members of the Philadelphia Nation of Islam brutally murdered seven Hanafis, including five members of Khalifa Hamaas Abdul Khaalis' immediate family. Again in 1977, the Hanafis captured national headlines when they tried to stop the screening of the movie Mohammed Messenger of God. They did this by seizing three buildings in Washington, D.C., the District Building (City Hall), the B'nai B'rith Building and the Islamic Center. They took several hostages. Several were injured and one was killed. Khalifa Hamaas Abdul Khaalis was sentenced to 21 to 120 years for his role in these seizures.

    The Five Percenters

Clarence 13X was a member in the Nation of Islam's Temple #7. He began to teach that the Black man was the god of the universe and had his origins in Mecca. His iconoclastic teachings resulted in his suspension from the Nation of Islam. In 1964, he founded the 'Five Percent Nation of Islam'. In 1969, Clarence 13X died of suspicious causes. Those who followed him referred to him as 'Father Allah'.

The Five Percenters agree with Elijah Muhammad's teaching that the White man is the devil. However, they also include all unscrupulous and deceitful people in this category, regardless of color. They believe that the Black race was the original race and the creator of civilization. For the Five Percenters, the demographics of the African-American community break down as follows

85% - the masses who are ignorant of true 'divine self'

10% - the corrupt rulers over the 85%

5% - the truly righteous followers of Father Allah

The Five Percenters are very influential in today's youth pop culture. Many of the most influential 'Rap' artists today are Five Percenters. Among the rappers who propagate the doctrine of the Five Percenters are King Sun, The Supreme Team, Lakim Shabazz, Rakim Allah, Brand Nubian and The Poor Righteous Teachers.

    Malcolm on His Own

With his platform as national spokesman, Malcolm X became an international figure. He was a coveted lecturer at universities, mosques and churches throughout the country. He recruited new leaders to the Nation. He even had a profound influence upon Elijah Muhammad's son, Wallace D. Muhammad (also known as Warith D. Muhammad). For many other leaders of the movement, however, Malcolm was gaining too much prominence too quickly. Many began to view him as a threat to Elijah Muhammad's leadership. He frequently made statements that went beyond the teachings of Elijah Muhammad and was often reprimanded.

There were those within the Nation of Islam who believed that Malcolm was trying to build a financial empire for himself. They began to leave him out of every edition of Muhammad Speaks, the organization's newspaper. Ironically, it was Malcolm who was instrumental in creating the paper. Aware of the controversy surrounding him, Malcolm began refusing interviews. He frequently told reporters, 'Please use Mr. Muhammad's picture instead of mine'.

The tension reached its apex when Elijah Muhammad was implicated by two former secretaries in a paternity suit. Disillusioned, Malcolm X began searching the Bible and Quran for some prophetic explanation for what was happening. This he did with the help of Warith D. Muhammad. He then conducted his own investigation into the allegations, and finally questioned Elijah Muhammad himself. 'I'm David', Elijah Muhammad replied. 'When you read in the Bible how David took another man's wife, I'm David....You read about Lot who went and laid up with his own daughter. I have fulfilled all those things.(12) Malcolm's directness in questioning the 'messenger of Allah' was perceived as overstepping his bounds.

Shortly after that incident, President Kennedy was assassinated. Elijah Muhammad commanded all ministers of the Nation of Islam to refrain from commenting on Kennedy's death. However, when asked his opinion of the assassination, Malcolm X replied, 'I saw it as a case of the chickens coming home to roost'.(13) Warith D. Muhammad and Malcolm X were subsequently suspended from the Nation of Islam. Reflecting upon that time, Warith remarked, 'I was charged with trying to influence Malcolm's theological thinking. I was also charged with giving him personal, private knowledge of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad's living, which was a lie'.(14)

Actually, Warith D. Muhammad did have an effect on Malcolm X's theological views. Both men began to lean more toward orthodox Islam. The more Warith read the writings of W. D. Fard, the more he questioned his father's claim to be the 'messenger of Allah'. Warith and Malcolm both concluded that Fard could not have been Allah himself.

Malcolm's ideas were further broadened by his travels. He went on the Hajj and changed his name to El-Hajj Malik El Shabazz. He met with various African leaders and discussed the conditions in their respective countries. Malcolm's ideological shift was drastic. His intention was to broaden his scope from American Black nationalism to global human rights. He intended to take the case of racism in the United States before the United Nations for action.(15)

On March 8, 1964, while still on suspension, Malcolm X announced that he was leaving the Nation of Islam and forming his own organization. Actually, he started two organizations, Muslim Mosque Incorporated (MMI) and the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU). MMI was based upon the principles of orthodox Islam. OAAU was an all Black, non-sectarian organization dedicated to creating a society where Blacks and Whites could live in brotherhood. Malcolm contended that Black/White brotherhood could not occur until Black people themselves were united. At that stage Black and White coalitions would be possible. He encouraged Whites to fight racism and was willing to accept aid from White donors.

However, Malcolm's new vision didn't have a chance to take root. On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated. He was speaking to a group of about 500 people in the Audubon Ballroom in New York City. Several gunmen opened fire on him from the third row. Three former members of the Nation of Islam were convicted of the crime. One of them, Talmadge Hayer, confessed and implicated the other two. Later he claimed that these two men were innocent, but that four active members of the Nation of Islam had actually helped him. (16)

A New Leader with New Ideas

After a series of suspensions, Warith D. Muhammad was restored to the Nation of Islam in 1969. His father, Elijah Muhammad, restored him to ministry in 1974, giving him freedom to preach what he pleased. On February 25, 1975, Elijah Muhammad died of congestive heart failure. The following day the Nation held its annual Savior's Day Rally in honor of Elijah Muhammad. There they pronounced Warith D. Muhammad as the new leader. W. D. Fard had actually chosen Warith before he was born, by predicting that Elijah Muhammad's next child would be a boy and would succeed his father.

Under the leadership of Warith D. Muhammad, the former Nation of Islam has become an orthodox community of Sunni Muslims. From the moment he took over as leader, he sought to align the doctrine of the organization with the Quran. He did away with Elijah Muhammad's doctrine of racial separation. He struggled to dismantle the cult-like structure. He also restored Malcolm X to a position of honor, naming a mosque after him. Warith began honoring the Constitution and encouraging participation in the political process. Most of the real estate holdings were quickly sold off. He redefined W.D. Fard as a 'wise man', and began to teach the five pillars of orthodox Islam. The name of the organization was changed to the Bilillian Community and later to the World Community Al-Islam in the West (WCIW). Although Warith opened the WCIW to people of all races, its membership remained predominantly Black. They continue to be known as Bilillians. Billal was an Ethiopian Muslim who was born in Circa in 600 AD. Billal was so firm in his convictions that when punished by his slave master after refusing to denounce Islam, he cried, 'Ahad, Ahad' (One, only one God).(17)

Imam Warith D. Muhammad made greater attempts to foster better relations with the United States government and foreign Islamic governments. His most comprehensive changes were in the realm of the family and the roles of women.

In a 1979 interview with Clifton Marsh, Warith D. Muhammad explained some of his views on women in Islam. 'Women in the Nation of Islam had a subordinate role to men. Warith D. Muhammad has changed that role, and in many cases, women are placed over men in administrative roles'.(18) The new structure in the WCIW does not make distinctions based on sex. In the mind of the imam, there was no religious justification for such rigid divisions between men and women. Imam Muhammad studied the role of women in Arabia during the time of the prophet Muhammad. He concluded that the right of women to equal education was protected under Islamic law. He justified the new status of women in the WCIW by saying, 'We cannot make any distinction between men and women in terms of intelligence, spirituality or moral nature. Women are equal to men and they are not to be treated any differently'.(19)

Girls' training courses were changed from home economics to general intellectual development. Women were free to seek employment outside of the home. 'I have looked at the role of women...in the light of what the prophet Muhammad did, to give more freedom, more equality to women'. He noted that women at the time of the prophet owned businesses, employed men, and had equal rights to education. He added that if women pursue higher education, 'how can we expect them to stay home? What is all this education for? You can't keep her at home nursing babies'.(20) This new teaching was a radical departure from the teachings of the Nation of Islam. It also deviated from the traditional expression of Islam in the Middle East.

When asked where he saw the WCIW in the year 2000, Imam Muhammad replied, 'I hope Muslims will be so comfortable in America that they won't have to introduce any structure or anything, just be American Muslims'. This vision has been fulfilled. The structure of the WCIW continued to diminish in scope. The name of the sect was changed to the American Muslim Mission. Their publication The American Muslim Journal was discontinued in 1984. The group was decentralized and absorbed into a larger body of Muslims in 1985, and Warith D. Muhammad became recognized as an Islamic leader by Muslim people of all national origins.

    The Old Time Religion

In 1970, toward the closing years of Elijah Muhammad's leadership, a splinter group broke with the Nation of Islam and founded Calistron. This first group saw the need to be more nationalistic than the parent group. However, by 1980, Calistron had disintegrated.

In spite of the restructuring which took place under Warith Muhammad, four reactionary factions within the Bilillian Community remained. They resisted the changes and held to the doctrine of Elijah Muhammad, 'the old time religion'.

The leader of the second splinter group was Silas Muhammad. In 1976 he broke with Warith Muhammad and founded the Lost, Found Nation of Islam. He restored all of Elijah Muhammad's myths and teachings.

The leader of the third splinter group was a former national spokesman for the WCIW, Louis Adul Farrakhan. Farrakhan broke with Warith Muhammad in December of 1977. He now refers to himself as the national spokesman for the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. His Black separatist organization first used the name Original Nation of Islam, but is now also known as the Nation of Islam. Minister Farrakhan has received a great deal of media attention for his inflammatory statements. Reporters continue to ask Mr. Farrakhan about his alleged anti-Semitism. In reality, the doctrine to which Farrakhan subscribes classifies all White people, Jews and Gentiles, as devils.

The leader of the fourth splinter group was John Muhammad. In 1978 he broke with Warith Muhammad and founded another Nation of Islam.

The leader of the fifth splinter group was Caliph Emanuel. In 1978 he broke with Warith Muhammad and founded yet another Nation of Islam.

    Other Islamic Groups

Some Islamic groups sprang up without growing out of the Moorish Temple of Science. Among them are the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam, USA and the Nubian Islamic Hebrews. The Nubians generally address themselves to issues of African-American identity, while the Ahmadiyya generally do not.

The Ahmadiyya Movement itself started in India in 1889. Its founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, saw himself as the Madhi (the Messianic savior of Islam). His aim was to bring reformation and revival to Islam. Ahmad's beliefs were expressed in his book Barahim-i-Ahmadtah.

Dr. Mufti Muhammad Sadiq brought the Ahmadiyya movement to the United States in 1921. Muhammad's original intention was to convert Islamic immigrants to the movement, but he experienced great success among African-Americans.

In terms of evangelism, the Ahmadiyyas are among the most aggressive Islamic denomination. Because of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad's claim to be the Madhi, the Ahmadiyyas are not regarded as truly Islamic by orthodox sects.

The Nubian Islamic Hebrews were founded in New York City in 1970 by Muhammad Ahmed ibn Abd'ullah. He was Sudanese and his followers believed him to be the Khaliyfa, the expected successor to the prophet Muhammad.

The Nubian Islamic Hebrews believe that the origin of the Nubian [Black] race goes back to Adam and Eve [Hawwah]. They have developed their own twist on 'the curse of Ham myth'. For them, Ham tried to commit sodomy with his drunk and naked father, Noah. The result was Noah's curse upon Canaan, which turned his skin pale. Thus the Canaanites became the father of all pale-skinned races. Some Nubians intermarried with the outcast children of Canaan and produced the Chinese, East Indians, Eskimos, Indonesians, Japanese, Koreans, Malayans, Pakistanis, and Sicilians. Though these races are mixed, they are regarded as Black.

The Nubian Islamic Hebrews also believe that two additional nations came from Ibraahiym [Abraham]. They were the descendants of Ishmael (the Ishmaelites) and the decedents of Isaac (the Israelites). Like the Israelites who were in Egyptian bondage, the Ishmaelites were held in American bondage for over 400 years. Out of this experience came the Nubians [Black people] of North America and the Caribbean. Because of their parallel experience with the Israelites, the American Nubians consider themselves to be Hebrews.

They believe that the beginning of their sect in 1970 was the opening of the seventh seal in Revelation 81. Basically the theology of the Nubian Islamic Hebrews is a mix of Christian, Islamic, and Jewish beliefs. Their current leader is As Siddid Al Imaan, Isa Al Haahi Al Madhi, the great-grandson of the founder Muhammad Ahmed ibn Abd'ullah.

    The Present Situation

Today the Islamic sects are all challenging the African-American church for the minds of the next generation. Because of Islam's emphasis on external religious practices, African-American adherents tend to operate on their internal instincts, which are essentially Christian. If the church takes the Muslim challenge seriously and theologically addresses the issues of dignity, African identity and global significance, then there is the potential of a great harvest among these Muslims. If the church fails to take the challenge seriously, then the Muslim presence will become a Muslim dominance and this will be a scourge upon the church.

The Islamic Ruling Regarding Morals and Ethics While Using Social Networks

by Imam Abu Laith Luqman Ahmad

Social networking can be an effective tool for maintaining contact with relatives, giving sincere advice, inviting to Islam, spreading the word of Allah, and disseminating the words of His Prophet (SAWS), as the Prophet has said: “inform about me, even if it’s only one verse.[1]” All of these actions mentioned are praiseworthy manifestations of faith if done with the right intention and in the right manner. Millions of Muslims across the world use facebook and other social networking outlets to do these things on a daily basis. Internet networking is the new international meeting place, and it can be a sometimes, spiritually uplifting, engaging, and profitable venue for global interconnection, spreading good, and familiarization of peoples from different backgrounds, cultures, and faiths. Human beings by our nature, are social beings, and social interconnectivity by itself is not prohibited in Islam, as Allah has indeed sanctioned it; We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other. Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)”.[2] What is not sanctioned however is that people connect with one another in ways that are prohibited by the Quran, by the Sunna of the Prophet, or by agreement of the Muslim scholars. Islamic laws of ethics and morality are applicable at all times, and do not cease to apply once you turn on your computer and go online. Sometimes people are misled into thinking that since we are sitting comfortably ensconced in our homes out of view from the public; our public words and actions online have no spiritual consequence. This could not be farther from the truth; فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ “And whoever does an atoms weight of good shall see it, and whoever does an atoms weight of bad shall see it”[3]. Being on or offline does not matter when it comes to maintaining Islamic standards of ethics and morality.

It is not permissible for a Muslim to use social networking as a means to cheat on one’s spouse, cultivate unlawful relationships, post revealing photographs, spread bedroom secrets, or to uncover the faults of others without just cause. All of the above are prohibited in Islam by agreement of the scholars, and have toxic consequences upon the soul.  Likewise, we shouldn’t use the internet to make fun of people, exhibit bad character, or to backbite and slander one another. Those of you who are looking for spouses should keep in mind that it will only take a few clicks for your potential husband or wife to see the extent of your bad character, in fact the world can see it and all who see it or read it will bear witness to it.

    Some people have taken it upon themselves to use social media like facebook, twitter, and Pinterest, to show the worst behavioral qualities that they have to the public. Remember, whatever any one of us puts out on the internet, multiplies and can spread way beyond our control. When it comes to good words or good deeds, they are automatically multiplied by at least tenfold;

[مَن جَاء بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا وَمَن جَاء بِالسَّيِّئَةِ فَلاَ يُجْزَى إِلاَّ مِثْلَهَا وَهُمْ لاَ يُظْلَمُونَ] “He that doeth good shall have ten times as much to his credit: He that doeth evil shall only be recompensed according to his evil: no wrong shall be done unto (any of) them.[4]”  However, bad words and statements, on the other hand, require more caution; a bad word, bad action or deed under normal circumstances, by itself constitutes only one infraction or sinful act. However, when you take into account the duplicitous nature of internet posting in that information is often re-tweeted, re-posted and forwarded to and read by others, who in turn, repeat the information, a single bad word, false statement, accusation or slander is multiplied exponentially, so one personal attack is not just one personal attack, it can easily become 1,000,000 personal attacks, and one heretical statement becomes 1,000,000 heretical statements. Then it’s all written down and goes on a scale that we will see on the Day of Judgment.

This is the true danger of using bad words, bad adab and bad judgment when posting, liking or commenting on things using the internet. As in the hadith of Jarir ibn Abdullah, who reported the Prophet (SAWS) as saying; “Whoever sets a good precedent in Islam will have the reward for that and the reward of those who do it after him, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest. And whoever sets a bad precedent in Islam will bear the burden of sin for that, and the burden of those who do it after him, without that detracting from their burden in the slightest.[5]” It is important for Muslims to be aware of the potential consequences for what they are posting. In the hadith of Abu Hurraira, he said: the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) said: “Whoever calls others to guidance will have a reward like that of those who follow it, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest. And whoever calls others to misguidance will have a burden of sin like that of those who follow it, without it detracting from their burden in the slightest.[6] With respect to the two previously mentioned hadith, Imam Nawawi says; “These two ahaadeeth clearly encourage us to set good precedents and forbid setting bad precedents. The one who sets a good precedent will have a reward like that of everyone who follows it until the Day of Resurrection, and the one who sets a bad precedent will have a burden of sin like that of everyone who follows it until the Day of Resurrection. The one who calls others to right guidance will have a reward like that of those who follow it, and the one who calls others to misguidance will have a burden of sin like that of those who follow it, whether this guidance or misguidance is something that he initiated or it was started before him, and whether that is by teaching knowledge, acts of worship, etiquette or anything else”.[7]

This is important to consider, because long after you have logged off of your computer, deleted your social network account, changed your profile, or in some way shielded your identity, your actions are still spreading and having consequences. This can continue long after your soul has left your body and you are in your grave. It is common that people post and say things that they give no second thought to, and it will turn out that those statements and posts will result in their being thrown into the hell-fire. In the hadith of Abu Hurraira, the Prophet (SAWS) said: "A slave of Allah might say something which pleases Allah Almighty without realizing it on account of which Allah raises him some degrees. A slave of Allah might say something which angers Allah Almighty without realizing it on account of which he falls into Jahannam.[8]

A general rule to keep in mind is that lawful and prohibited words, and statements; continue to come under legislation of the shariah whether online or offline. The angels that record deeds are not intimidated by the internet, and there is no way that a person can shield his or her actions from them or from Allah sub’haanahu wa ta’ala.

Beloveds, let’s be mindful of what we post or comment on the internet because bad words, bad adab, profanity, personal attacks, false accusations, lewdness, and misinformation about the deen, has its consequences. Hiding behind online anonymity may work for some people to conceal their real identities from the public, but it doesn’t work with Allah; “And every human being's destiny have We tied to his neck; and on the Day of Resurrection We shall bring forth for him a record which he will find wide open, and he will be told:] "Read this thy record,! Sufficient is thine own self today to make out thine account!” 17:13-14 Quran. Remember to think before you post or comment. And Allah knows best.

    REALITY CHECK

    REALITY CHECK

This writing will be no cause for alarm for those who make full use of the intellect that almighty Allah blessed us with. For others, they will remain in the dark because Allah (SWA) has placed a veil over their eyes, and their hearing is blocked out from the truth. Their minds are filled with darkness, so they fail to see the light.

Imam W. Deen Mohammed recommended that we support Barack Obama as president of the United States of America. He did not make this recommendation because he guessed that Obama was perfect and/or holy. He made his recommendation based on this man's track record in politics. Some of us are afraid of politics because we don't understand it. Some of us don't even understand the purpose of life. This deficiency causes some of us to fall off of vital cliffs because of this lack of understanding.

If you are in danger of falling off of a cliff, and president Obama could save you from falling off of the cliff, would you refuse his help because he is in favor of gay marriages? I certainly wouldn't, because it was not Obama that gave me this sacred life that I have. It was Allah alone who did this...not Obama. He is responsible for his life, and I for mine. And so, since Allah gave me charge over my life to guard and preserve it, and because He put it into Obama's heart to help preserve my own (though our views are different) I'll be damned if I'll give it up because of what I think of the man who is trying to rescue me. That would be utter stupidity.

In the wisdom of Imam Mohammed's vision, G_d gave him the wisdom to see, and understand that none is perfect except Allah Himself.

President Obama is the president of the American people. He is not the president of one group over others. He is not the president of black people, and not of other ethnicity. He is not the president of the Christians, and not the Muslims and others. He is not the president of the gays, and not everyone else. Some Muslims still need to be reminded that this is not a Muslim country. They get that mixed up in their confusion as well.

One of the most notable things that I remember Imam Mohammed saying was when he said that the only reason why Allah has allowed America to not have been overrun with a major internal war within the boundaries of this country since the civil war is because, though evil runs rampant in the society, we have still been allowed to practice our religion freely. Though I realize that I am not able to quote his exact words, this was the idea that he generated. If someone would like to share the exact article so that we can read his exact words, it would be most useful and appreciated. I intend to conduct my own research as well.

For those who are not secure enough in their belief in Allah and the last day as believing Muslims who think that they may be vulnerable to the poison of homosexuality, my advice to them is that perhaps they should stay indoors. But by all means instruct your children against this disease.

Getting back to President Obama, I have quoted this many times, and I will quote it one more time...Obama is not G_d, and neither is any other man. Even the Prophet was not beyond reproach as we see demonstrated in the Qur'an. Allah had to correct him from turning away from a blind man who was seeking Islamic advice from him that he might perhaps be able to share it with others. This while he (The Prophet) was instructing some of the wealthy Quraish nobleman who were probably picking their nails as they were asking him repeatedly to repeat himself while being bored by what may have benefited them. This admonishment of the Prophet by Allah led to the revelation of a new sura in the Qur'an.

    See: Sura 80: Al-'Abasa — He Frowned:

Though there may be significant differences in the rank of the Prophet, and that of Obama, as well as the magnitude of the infractions by the two, the wise are able to reflect on the point being made here.

    Surah 23. The Believers

    1. The believers must (eventually) win through,-
    2. Those who humble themselves in their prayers;
    3. Who avoid vain talk;
    4. Who are active in deeds of charity;
    5. Who abstain from sex,
    6. Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,
    7. But those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors;-
    8. Those who faithfully observe their trusts and their covenants;
    9. And who (strictly) guard their prayers;-
    10. These will be the heirs,
    11. Who will inherit Paradise: they will dwell therein (for ever).

Notice...the above ayats mention nothing about Islamic police, or Islamic sooth sayers seeking to bewitch, and spook up the believers

    Polygamy

Imam WD Mohammed speaking on Polygamy in 2003

in Atlanta Ga. Courtesy of Mohammed Hassan

Polygamy, polygynyv Q. 33.50-2; Prophet limit of wives"It is not lawful for thee (Prophet to marry more) women after this nor to change them for (other) wives even though their beauty attract thee except any thy right hand should possess (as handmaidens): and Allah cloth watch over all things.

"Q. 4.3; Limit four wives"if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans marry women of your choice two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them) then only one or (a captive) that your right hands possess. That will be more suitable to prevent you from doing injustice Question: What should be the approach for brothers who want to take a second wife in America?Imam W.D. Mohammed:Leave America, Allahu Akbar.

Now I don't know whether that came from my jinn or from my angel but I know it came from me. Now I'm going to try to come from wisdom. It was just a spontaneous response, ok? No one was in control so it must have been the jinn or angel. We should first know what polygamy is in AI Islam, we should first be very clear; believe me it means more than one wife.Prophet marriages to assist widow, weld tribes. The limit as you know is four wives but the Prophet (saw had 9wives, most authorities say 9, some say 12. The Prophet (saw )accepted that he have 9 wives.

He was accepting wives not because he needed sex, he was accepting wives to strengthen the ummah, the community. And the wives that he married were women that would not have been attractive to the average man who is looking for a wife, they were over age. Or they had been married before and had children and were beyond that, to old for child bearing, they were all women who were at the mercy of society. And most of them were women who had enjoyed status, respect in society and now the war had taken their husbands away or for some reason they were separated from their husbands and in some cases it was they were converted to A1 Islam and the husband wasn't and these women needed support from the society.

So the Prophet (saw) accepted them mainly to give them support from the society and to benefit the community of Al Islam or the work ofA1 Islam to benefit from their reputation, their high standing thatthey had in their tribe or among their people. So the Prophet knew,he was a strategist, he was diplomatic and he was a great strategist.

He knew that if he married a certain woman that her tribe would feel a family connection with Prophet Muhammad (saw) and would feel obligated then to look at him not as a person who is outside of their tribe or a person outside of their way of thinking, but they have to look at him now as a family member. And by them accepting him as a family member their prejudices would be left and they would see his value with clear eyes rather than eyes prejudiced by their opinion of him before he became one of them and they would become Muslim and that is exactly what happened.

1 Kings 11:1-3; Solomon 700 wives 300 concubines But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites,Zidonians, and Hittites; [2] Of the nations concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. [3]And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. Many non-Muslims became Muslim because of Prophet Muhammad's (saw)marriage to members of their tribe or to members of their association. So this was very wise of him and I'm sure he would have kept increasing the number until he got maybe as many as Solomon of the Bible had. I think Solomon had 700 wives or something like that So G-d gave him revelation and it is with us now in Quran and He told him that he wouldn't be permitted to have any more wives. And he stopped at that number some say 9, some say 12.

Now if that is why the Prophet (saw took on other wives then you and I when we're thinking about taking on more wives we should benefit from the Prophet's (saw) reason for taking on more wives.Q. 4.24; Marry not for lust "

Thus hath Allah ordained (prohibitions) against you: except for these all others are lawful provided ye seek (them in marriage) with gifts from your property desiring chastity not lust."Allah (swt) put it in the Quran so that we support the Prophet's(saw) reason when we look for other wives.

First Allah (swt) says do not marry for lust, that means sexual desire, that should not be your reason for marrying her, that you want to have sex with her, that is out, that is eliminated.Your first reason should be that you are attracted to her as a female human person it should not be because you want to have sex with her. If that's your reason you are no more than a dog in heat, you are less than a wolf because a wolf won't have sex with a female wolf just to have sex. A wolf has sex with a female wolf to have a family. The male is just conscious of being in a family as the female, the male will even step into the role of the female to protect the children when she can't to it, this is the wolf.

    I would like to tell you a lot of things I don't have time, that is good for us. En sha Allah I need to write a lot of books.Q. 4.3; Limit four wives Allah (swt) says also "And marry women" and He gives the numbers up to four, "But if you cannot be fair by orphans then only one," this is in the Quran. Now I used to think that was because I wasn't really as familiar with all of this language in Quran way back then as I am now.I was thinking that G-d was saying that one is best for you. One translation says that, "One is best if you understood." But I don't think so, that translation shouldn't read like that because it does not say that in Arabic, it is not put that way in Arabic. I won't say any more than Allah (swt) is saying. I don't want you to have but one wife , no Allah (swt) is not saying that.Q. 2.221;

Believing slave is better than unbeliever Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters) until they believe; a slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman even though she allure you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: a man slave who believes is better than unbeliever even though he allure you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the fire. But Allah beckons by His grace to the Garden (of Bliss) and forgiveness and makes His Signs clear to mankind: that they may celebrate His praise. Also Allah (swt) says a believing slave is better than a free idolater, idol worshiper, it didn't say a believing slave in Al Islam is better than a free Christian it didn't say that. It didn't say better than a free Jew. It didn't say better than a free Sabein because that is another religion respected in the Quran that was in that part of the world. It means better than a mushirkeen, that person who worships idols, that is one of the pagans.

No sex without marriage in AI Islam. What does that tell us? That tell us the men in the following of Muhammad (saw) were having marital relations - - understand this, there is no sex in AL-Islam without marriage. Any sex outside of marriage in AL-Islam is a serious sin punishable by flogging in the public, public whipping. And that is something that most of us didn't understand before, many of you here today you probably don't understand that.

There is no sex without marriage, you don't need a preacher in AL-Islam to be married, you don't need an Imam in AL-Islam to be married ,all you need in AL-Islam to be married is the woman you want and two witnesses. Preferably witness from her side two and also witnesses your side which will be three, but if you have anybody just one witness from her family, from her side or her close friend if she doesn't have family members and a witness from your side, if those witnesses are there, if they are female you need two, males you can have only one from her side. Then that is enough for you to get married.

    Q. 30.30; A1 Islam is the religion of nature So set thou thy face steadily and truly to the Faith: (Establish)Allah's handiwork according to the pattern on which He has made mankind: no change (let there be) in the work (wrought) by Allah:that is the standard Religion: but most among mankind understand not.AL-Islam as it is read in Arabic "Led deene haneefan fetratal-laahellatee fataran naasa `alayhaa," translated it means AL-Islam is the religion of natural origin, the pattern on which He patterned human society.

This religion believes in the excellence of nature and G-d created human beings to live up to and live out the excellence of nature that He created the human for, this is AL-Islam.Q. 10.16; I lived a lifetime among you Say: "If Allah had so willed I should not have rehearsed it to you nor would He have made it known to you. A whole lifetime before this have I tarried amongst you: will ye not then understand?

"So AL-Islam is a religion that wants to make us aware that G-devolved your life upon the pattern of nature.

The nature of a human being is the nature of human even before G-d revealed anything, no Prophet, no Messenger nothing.Muhammad (pbuh) is a sign of that, Muhammad (pbuh) had lived 40years and didn't even know revealed religion but he had stayed away from worshiping idols, he had stayed away from bad behavior. There was no fault seen in him as a human being.Jesus is a sign, Mohammed fulfilled the sign

    Q. 23.50; Jesus is a sign And We made the son of Mary and his mother as a Sign: We gave them both shelter on high ground affording rest and security and furnished with springs. He had no human flaws, nothing bad about him, he didn't need A1Islam to make him a better human being. A1 Islam didn't make Muhammad (pbuh) a better human being, he was already the best human he could be. He didn't drink , he didn't lie, he didn't steal, he respected what was supposed to be respected, he was loving and charitable, he was just perfect as a human being.

Jesus Christ is a sign of that Muhammad (saw) is that fulfilled. Jesus as a sign points to that.Adam didn't need revelation, his life supported excellence Was Mohammed a new man, was this the first time G'd ever had a human being on earth like that? No, Adam was like that, your first father was like that, he didn't need revelation, his life that G'd gave him was enough to support him coming into the excellence that G'd intended for his creation. That is why Allah (swt) says in Qur'an Allah (swt) says of Mohammed (saw) "He already lived among you a life time" and what do you think it means? It doesn't mean after revelation.

G'd is pointing to Mohammed telling those people who were rejecting him, his life before I talked to him, before he me is proof to you of his excellence and your responsibility to support him. He was already established worthy of your support before I even communicated anything to him, it said he already lived a lifetime among you.Q. 33.21; You have in Muhammad an excellent model Ye have indeed in the Apostle of Allah a beautiful pattern of(conduct) for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day and who engages much in the praise of Allah.G-d says, "Certainly you have in Muhammad (pbuh) the most excellent model Uswatan hasanatan for any who believe in G-d and final day and whoever praises G-d." For any, it did not say for Muslim but for anyone, a Jew, a Christian, a Sabian, a Buddhist any who has faith in Gd and the final day. Now you know they may call G-d differently by name and have a different idea of G-d but they still have a belief in the destiny and accountability for the way they live. So any of those people should find in Muhammad (saw) an excellent example, and they do. They love him, they respect him.Getting back to you the brothers understand that Al Islam respects nature and wants us to be reconnected with nature as a human being, conscious person believing that nature evolves life to be most excellence.Q. 2.221; Believing slave is better than unbeliever The Qur'an says a believing female slave is better than a free female idol worshiper though you may in your mind think differently about it, this is what G'd revealed. Now what does that say? That says that Muslim men were permitted, when this revelation came, to have their female slaves that converted to A1 Islam, they were not told not to, but they were discouraged when it came to choosing an idol worshiper from their slaves. They were not told, "You can't do it," but they were discouraged.

I'm saying all that because it is important that I don't miss these important points while addressing you, while addressing the question that the brother asked for us, that does not require all of these other concerns that I am bringing out. But it situates us better to make decisions. That is why I am bringing these things out.

Sex without marriage is punishable in Islam In Islamic law, we don't know this, if you have sex with a woman, a female and she complains against you, that you are not accepting her as a wife or treating her as a wife, the judge in an Islamic court overseas out of America, and in America, some of these are in American - - I'm sure these immigrant they have their own courts believe me, they make their own decisions many times, especially if their members come to them for decision. The judge will say, "Did you have sex with her?" And the man he says, "Yes." He (Judge) will say, "Then you are her husband,"

In Al Islam if you have sex with a woman you are either her husband or you're an offender that has to be punished. So if you say, "No I'm not her husband" then the judge will say, "Take him out." But if you say, "Yes she's my wife," then she's your wife.Wife originally meant mate; that means when you come together sexually you mated her. Animals mate and humans mate, so when you mate, that is it, she is your wife. Now maybe you didn't intend it to be that way, that is the way it is in Al Islam.

If you mated with her she is your wife.I know all this stuff that exists among Muslims, you don't have to tell me, after I leave here I'm sure some brother is going to say, "Yeah the Imam doesn't know all what's happening in the Islamic world because they have this convenient marriage, you can't marry  temporarily.

"Muta" temporary marriage is high class prostitution. Bukhari 5-527; Muta no temporary marriage. Ali bin Talib reported On the day of Khaibar, Allah's Apostle forbade the Mut'a (i.e. temporary marriage). No there is no temporary marriage that is bidah, that is an unaccepted innovation; because you are away from home and you don't have your wife with you, your host is going to provide you with a woman temporarily, that is a whore.

That's not a wife, I'm going to go with her for convenience because my wife is not with me that's a prostitute that's not my wife. And you are going to pay him or her,him through her. He's a pimp and you are going to pay him directly or she is going to ask you to give her so much and then he will get this later. So that's a high class way of prostituting women in the Islamic world, it's not accepted. So brother you said, "How should I the approach a second wife?" I'm answering your question right now.

During the time of Muhammad the Prophet (pbuh) which the commentaries in the Quran in English will give you much of what I'm giving you now, Muhammad (pbuh) had to engage in fighting, he had to be in war for much of the time that he was on earth. So a lot of women lost their husbands, a lot of children became orphans and they already had problems of the society even before war. Now it is complicated by more men not being with their family so therefore, men needed to accept more wives. There was a need for men to accept more wives and there was a need for men to accept those wives and not be insensitive to the needs of their children if they had children. So it was established to protect wives from prostitution because many of these women they weren't converts from Christianity or Judaism, they were converts from idol worship. And idol worship didn't teach them refined behavior for sex and everything, how you should guard your sexual life, it didn't teach them that. So these women if they didn't have food to eat they thought nothing of going out in the street and standing in the road and saying, "Would you like to have a pretty woman?" Prostitute themselves, so they would prostitute themselves. So to reduce the likelihood of them going into prostitution the Prophet (pbuh) was inspired by G'd to encourage men to marry these women and to give a home to the orphan. We live in a different world now a days where the taxes are collected  so that we have institutions and whatever, organizations to protect the society.

In those days you didn't have jails, you have to understand the reality of that time, you didn't have jails and you didn't have social institutions, family service institutions etc.So how was that need addressed? By men who had wealth and could afford to feed more people. So they were encouraged to take on the wives and also take on orphans and provide food and clothing. And many of them came from slaves and they came straight into the house of these wealthy men to be protected by these better-off men. And that's why you read in the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), "Feed the slave the food you eat yourselves. And clothe the slave with the clothing you wear yourselves" This was the teaching of Prophet Muhammad (saw). In other words, do not treat them in any way different than you treat yourself and your family members, your own sons from your own loins when it comes to providing their needs for them, you have to give them the same And so it would have been for education. So it is reported in the history of Prophet Mohammed, a  clever way also to get rid of slavery`? Yes. So the benefit of having a slave is that you don't have to give them what you give a free person.

Now Mohammed the Prophet (saw) was inspired by G'd to tell them no you have to give them the same that you give free people, the same clothing, the same food and the same opportunities that you give your own member of your own family. So that killed slavery.

If this county had that it would have saved a lot of lives, blood and suffering; if this country had been inspired by G'd to handle it the way G'd handled it through Muhammad the Prophet (pbuh). It would have been wonderful.  Mohammed the Prophet (saw) once heard one man calling his servant the man said, "Ya abdee" it means "Oh my servant, or my slave" and Muhammad the Prophet (pbuh) said "Call him not your Abd," why?Because G-d says all people are the Ebaad of G-d, meaning all are the servants of G-d or the slaves of G-d. He said, "Call him, say tohim my son." Like you would say to your own son,"My son." I go back  to the first - - these microphones are sensitive, this is a cordless microphone isn't it? We are cordless too. Don't think industry is a head of G'd, industry is always trailing G'd, praise be to Allah(swt). Sex with the female means she is your wife If you have sex with a female she becomes your wife don't forget that, that is very important and that is the nature of man. G'd didn't have to give you a book to know that. G-d created you with a  soul and with a mind, a nature and spirit to know how to respect your sexual involvement with a woman. Your own conscience tells you that this is a very serious thing I'm doing, but you usually wait until you have a child and then both of you start to look at each other different, right?

Sex is sacred it is that which extends life G-d's purpose not our purpose for creating sex is so that we would extend our life and our generation in our children. That is the most sacred thing, the most sacred purpose for sex. It is to continue the life of human beings so that we have more human beings coming. And once we have that we want to look at the woman with a higher respect and value her as our wife and the mother of our child, you see? But some men they will have a woman for the first time and not have her until she understands that he will say,"You know you're going to be my woman now, right? That is that excellent nature in you, that G-d evolved the world upon. You want her to know, "Yes I'm going to have sex, now and you know you're going to be my woman now." He doesn't say wife but that's my mate, you're my mate now.And she loves that G'd has given her the nature to really love to hear that from you.

Now I will answer your question in one statement: You approach it with a clean heart, clean mind, clean and pure intentions. That's how you approach a second wife and in light of what I have given you.  Imam WD Mohammed (raa)
